As I mentioned in my last news post here, all CAMBA groomed winter trails and warm weather MTB trails are closed. By Sawyer County ordinance, our trails, as well as ATV and snowmobile trails, must be closed from April 1st to May 15th. While that is the written rule, in practice the trails typically open before May 15th if the weather permits. Bayfield County does not have the same ordinance but their forestry department does announce when all trails are closed.
In fact, the CAMBA trails at Mt. Ashwabay often open weeks before May 15th because of their warmer micro-climate on the Bayfield Peninsula. Our local trail stewards for Mt. Ashwabay watch the conditions and forecast closely. When they are past the freeze/thaw cycle and the trail tread is dry, they give the Bayfield County forestry department a call to suggest we open the trails.
Generally, the same process happens for the CAMBA trails in Sawyer county, but a week or two later because the snow further inland tends to stick around longer.
So watch this website, the CAMBA Facebook Page, and your inbox for an email newsletter with updates as the weather continues to warm up. And in the meantime, please don’t be tempted to ride the trails until we officially open them, but you can enjoy riding on the endless miles of gravel roads. See the CAMBA gravel page for suggested routes and maps.
